According to a report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the increasing popularity of sport utility vehicles (SUV) has contributed to the overall increase of rollover accidents. The Characteristics of Fatal Rollover Crashes, was published in 2002 by the NHTSA, and included some of the following statistics:
- Rollover crashes make up about 20% of all fatal crashes.
- Most fatal rollover accidents are single vehicle crashes.
- Speed is a substantial factor in rollover accidents, with most rollover accidents occurring on roads with speed limits of 55 miles per hour or higher.
- Between 1991 and 2000, the number of rollover accidents has more than doubled.
The NHTSA report also looked at several causes of rollover accidents and the fatalities that occurred. In over three-fourths of the fatalities, the victims were not wearing seat belts. The study also found that in most of the accidents, the vehicles were either traveling straight forward, or were trying to maneuver a curve. Additionally, more than one-fourth of fatal rollover crash drivers did not attempt any kind of avoidance maneuver.
