An Oakland resident died in a car crash on Highway 880 on Friday, December 12, 2008 at around 3:30 a.m. The victim was Vu Phan, who was driving a Honda traveling southbound on I-880 near Hayward. Mr. Phan initially rear ended a big rig and was disabled as a result of that accident; the headlights on his car were also blacked out. Very soon after, a UPS truck failed to see the disabled Honda and struck it. After both trucks pulled off to the shoulder, a passerby spotted Mr. Phan’s body on the highway. Officials stated that it was unclear whether Mr. Phan was ejected from the vehicle, or if he had already been standing outside of the vehicle when he was struck.
