CAR ACCIDENTS MOST COMMON CAUSE OF SPINAL CORD INJURIES—CALL NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ACCIDENT ATTORNEYS NOW (Part 2 of 2)

The severity of a spinal cord injury is taken into account when evaluating how badly a person is injured. Spinal cord injuries are divided into two categories: partial or complete. In a partial spinal cord injury, the injured person may still have sensation or feeling in some parts of their body, as the spinal cord is still able to deliver messages to and from the brain. A complete spinal cord injury might be a misnomer because even in these cases, the spinal cord is never completely severed. In these cases, there is a total or close to total loss of sensation below the point of the injury. Spinal cord injuries may result in loss of movement, loss of sensation or bladder control, and difficulty breathing.

Spinal cord injuries can be caused from traumatic or even nontraumatic injuries. Traumatic injuries include car accidents, gunshot or knife wounds which all may dislocate, crush or compress the vertebrae. Nontraumatic injuries may be caused by cancer, arthritis or infections. Car and motorcycle accidents account for more than 50 percent of spinal cord injuries, which makes them the leading cause of spinal cord injuries. Fifteen percent of spinal cord injuries are caused by violent incidents, such as gunshot and knife wounds. Approximately 22 percent of the injuries are caused by falls. Sports, recreational injuries and diseases account for the rest of the spinal cord injuries.
