Third degree burns are the most serious type of burn as it involves burning all layers of the skin and may damage tissue permanently, as well as fat, muscle and bone. The burned area can either appear black and charred or white and dry. For these types of burns, it is recommended that you call emergency medical assistance. While waiting for medical assistance, it is recommended that you do not remove burnt clothing, or immerse the burns in cold water. Fourth degree burns affect the muscle, tendon and ligament tissue and will result in grafting, and may often times be fatal.

There are several different ways to receive burns, aside from the usual hot water or stove burns. Burns can be caused by chemicals, electrocution, or radiation. Chemical burns usually occur with chemicals that are strong acids or bases, and can cause damage down to the bone. Electrical burns are caused by electric shock, which includes lightning (although rare); burns caused by electrical shock and the damage caused are not always evident. Radiation burns are caused by extensive exposure to UV lighting, which includes tanning booths, sunlamps, X-rays, and radiation therapy. The most common type of these burns is from over exposure to the sun.

Different dangers are associated with burns which are not always as evident as something like a burn blister. Burns occurring during a fire may cause damage by way of smoke inhalation, or other cardiovascular injuries. There is also a chance of infection or tetanus after the burn.
