The roads in Oakland are congested with cars, and with traffic come traffic accidents. How can you help reduce the risk of getting in an accident? Know the facts. The California Highway Patrol has compiled statistics on fatal and injury motor vehicle traffic collisions according to the drivers and vehicles. For 2006 (the most recent year available), the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) has reported:

  • The highest number of accidents occurred in passenger cars, while pickup or panel trucks were the second highest.

  • The least number of accidents occurred with passenger cars with trailers, and school buses.

  • The total number of licensed drivers who were involved in collisions was the highest in the 45 to 49 age range, at 2,503,200.

  • The number of accidents between males and females were pretty equally divided, at 11,892,200 and 11,344,900 respectively.

  • Many of the fatal accidents occurred in the early hours of the morning, between midnight and 3:00 a.m. and then between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

  • The accidents that resulted in fatal collisions were most commonly in broadside accidents, followed by hitting an object, and then head-on accidents.
