ELDER ABUSE CASE IN MARIN COUNTY: CONTACT A PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEY IF YOU HAVE BEEN INJURED
Elder abuse is a growing concern in American society because of the abuser’s ability to keep the abuse a secret and the possible unwillingness of the victim to report the crime. Elder abuse cases can be physical, mental or financial. In many of these cases, the elderly are abused by their family members, friends or caretakers who are in control of many aspects of their lives. Abusers may be able to get away with these crimes because the victims may blame themselves, or may not even be aware of the abuse. For example, victims who are confined to a wheelchair may be reluctant to report any kind of abuse by their caretakers if they are solely dependent on that other person in order to survive.
Malcom McVickar Jr., a Tiburon resident, pled guilty on Friday in Marin County to grant theft by embezzlement, theft from an elder and commercial burglary. It is reported that he stole more than $200,000 from his 92 year old father, and six other victims. Mr. McVickar reportedly tried to scam an 84 year old woman out of $450,000 by telling her that he needed it to pay for his sick father’s care and would repay her almost double the amount. An accomplice of Mr. McVickar’s pleaded guilty to helping him cash in checks. Mr. McVickar has agreed to serve up to nine years in jail as part of his plea bargain.
