In yet another San Francisco Municipal Railway accident, two MUNI trains crushed a sport utility vehicle between them on Market Street in San Francisco on August 4, 2009. This accident followed another MUNI accident that occurred on July 18, 2009, and which injured 47 people. The August 4 accident occurred on Market and Noe Streets around 5:45 p.m., and appears to be caused by the second train hitting the SUV, and causing it to hit the train in front of it. Although there were only six people injured and there were no serious injuries, there is still increasing concern about the cause of the incident and the future of MUNI.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the accident, but according to the passengers on the train, it appears as though the driver was distracted by another passenger right before the accident occurred. The director of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency expressed his frustration and concern at this recent MUNI accident. There have been accusations that MUNI has concentrated on timely service more so than the safety of the trains. However, statistics show that MUNI has actually had a double digit decline in traffic incidents. There are new safety measures to be carried out, such as a new camera monitoring system on all trains.

Drivers of tractor-trailer trucks are required to get a special license and extensive training on the operation of the vehicle. A truck of that size may be particularly dangerous on the road because of its weight, inability to stop quickly, inability to see other vehicles in certain spots and the possibility of an “underride.” Since a big rig truck is higher off the ground than an average sedan, an “underride” occurs when part of the smaller vehicle is crushed under the truck, which may cause more damage to the passengers inside. Accidents may also occur if the cargo on the truck is not properly secured, which may hurt passengers in other vehicles.

On July 16, 2009, a settlement was reached between the family of Rhonda Henson and the Pioneer Drilling Company for $16 million in Texas.
