MILLIONS OF SENIOR CITIZENS ENDURE ELDER ABUSE—LEARN HOW TO STOP IT AND HOW TO BE COMPENSATED FOR YOUR INJURIES FROM OAKLAND ELDER ABUSE LAW FIRM (Part 2 of 2)
Because it is hard to pinpoint exactly what elder abuse is, and since many cases go unreported, it is hard to estimate the number of people suffering from elder abuse. However, the National Center on Elder Abuse has predicted that between one and two million Americans over the age of 65 have been injured as a result of elder abuse. Only about one in 14 cases of elder abuse actually come to the attention of authorities. Even less frequently reported are cases of financial abuse, which only come to the attention of authorities in one in 25 cases. If you are a senior citizen being abused by a caretaker or family member, and have nowhere else to turn, call Greenberg & Rudman LLP to protect your rights at 1-800-252-9776 (1-800-ALAWPRO).
For every case elder abuse and neglect that is reported to authorities, there are approximately five more that go unreported. In 1996, there were approximately 450,000 adults over the age of 60 who were abused and/or neglected in a domestic setting. Between 1986 and 1996, there was a steady increase in the reporting of elder abuse in America. There were 117,000 reports in 1986 but 294,000 in 1996—that is a 150% increase. The majority of elder abuse victims are female but there is not much difference in the percentage of male and female abusers. The most common group of abusers is adult children, followed with other family members and then spouses.
