MAN KILLED BY CALTRAIN ON TRACKS IN MOUNTAIN VIEW
Trains can be particularly dangerous to pedestrians and vehicles stopped on the tracks. These large vehicles usually have several railway cars attached, which makes it incredibly hard for the train to stop in a short amount of time. There is also additional danger to the passengers riding on the train. In 2009, there were 17 fatalities on the Caltrain railroad tracks, which service a large portion of the San Francisco Bay Area.
There were two separate accidents on Caltrains this December. The first incident occurred on December 21, 2009 when Caltrain hit an unoccupied vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was able to escape right before the crash; the incident resulted in no injuries, but there was damage to the railroad tracks. The second incident occurred on December 23 when a man stepped onto the tracks in Mountain View. The man was killed at the San Antonio Station around 5:10 p.m. but there were no injuries to the passengers on the train. Since the accident happened during peak commuting hours, the passengers were boarded onto another train.
Unfortunately, many of these Caltrain accidents occur as a result of intentional suicides. However, there may be accidents in which the deaths were unintentional and may be attributed to the negligence of the train conductor or because of the poor maintenance of Caltrain or its railroad tracks.
